Kombucha, 鈥榯he elixir of life鈥 is increasingly becoming a staple in many people鈥檚 diets due to its restorative antioxidant, immune boosting properties. But what about its beauty benefits?

Journalists and beauty bloggers can鈥檛 get enough of the stuff, with skin gurus like the legendary Trinny Woodall naming our very own booch as her ! So, what are the skin benefits of Kombucha?

Let’s talk all things Kombucha, digestion, skincare and acne…

  • Kombucha and acne
  • Kombucha skincare
  • Leaky gut, leaky skin: what鈥檚 the connection?
  • Is Kombucha face wash really a thing?
  • Do SCOBY masks really work?

Kombucha and acne聽

In recent years, the relationship between our gut and other parts of the body have been widely explored, between good gut health and a healthy heart, a robust immune system and maintaining a good metabolism. , Kombucha can also help to reduce skin inflammation, which is great news for eczema and acne sufferers. So, maybe there is a link between gut health and acne after all. Kombucha contains organic acids and natural probiotics, which 鈥鈥, and maintain the natural balance of the skin, so less breakouts!

Kombucha skincare聽

You can reap the skin benefits of Kombucha by drinking it, but you can also use it on your skin! , expert skin care therapist Inna Knyazenvch explains that: 鈥淔ermented ingredients containing probiotics can help to improve inflammatory skin conditions and reduce premature signs of ageing鈥 and that adding probiotics to our skincare聽 鈥渨ill help to [create] a healthier skin microbiome and boost its immunity to fight environmental toxins and bacteria.鈥 鈥 what鈥檚 not to love?!

Over the years, many skincare brands have released their own fermented skincare products but they can be on the expensive side. We鈥檝e created a recipe for a luxurious Kombucha face cream, which is quick and easy to make at home. It contains silky shea butter, coconut oil, essential oils and our hero ingredient 鈥 黑料大事记 Original Kombucha! Along with our antioxidant and vitamin-rich Kombucha, our recipe also contains frankincense essential oil, which has fantastic antiseptic properties. All of our Kombuchas are fully organic, vegan and gluten free.

Check out our for tips on how to make it.

Leaky gut, leaky skin: what’s the connection?

The term refers to when your gut lining becomes compromised and allows undigested food particles and toxins to enter the bloodstream, causing an immune response and possibly leading to health conditions, including uncomfortable skin conditions. There are a variety of causes for a leaky gut, including high stress levels and eating food that does not agree with you.听

Similarly, refers to when your skin is not acting like the barrier between your insides and the outside world, as it should. This can lead to toxins and environmental allergens entering your bloodstream and causing internal issues.听

According to 鈥渋ncreased intestinal permeability is causing or contributing to certain maladies, including potentially ataopic dermatitis鈥. Simply put, it鈥檚 your leaky gut behind your common inflammatory skin conditions, such as psoriasis, eczema and rosacea.. So, before healing your skin, you need to heal your gut and address any digestive problems you are having.听

If you鈥檙e looking for some ways to improve your digestive health, read our blog on the health benefits of Kombucha. Or, if you鈥檙e looking to get started improving your digestive health right away, why not get involved in our 14 day Kombucha challenge?听

Is Kombucha face wash really a thing?

All skin is different. Whether that鈥檚 natural or chemical, many of us have tried a number of different face washes and are still yet to find something that works for our skin. If you鈥檙e still experimenting, why not give a Kombucha face wash a go? This home remedy is as simple as it sounds, and involves using a bottle of Kombucha to wash your face. Remember to only try this with raw, unflavoured Kombucha as other varieties could contain harmful sugars and additives which could cause a reaction in your skin.听

As with any changes to your skincare routine, you may experience a little bit of irritation to begin with, however if this persists, stop using this method immediately. And it goes without saying, keep it away from your eyes!

Do SCOBY masks really work?

SCOBY is the jelly-looking, living culture of bacteria and yeast used to make Kombucha. And, although SCOBY may not sound and look the most appealing, a SCOBY mask could be just what you need for softer, more supple skin. How do you make a SCOBY mask you may ask. Well, you鈥檒l need to source some SCOBY (either homemade or shop-bought) and blend it up into a paste. It鈥檚 completely normal if it has a bit of a chunky texture! Next, apply it to your skin聽 like you would any other face mask, let it work for around 10 minutes while you watch TV or soak in the bath, and then wash it off. You can get creative with this mask and add in other nourishing ingredients, like Aloe Vera or essential oils for additional benefits.

Alternatively, you can use a thin disc of SCOBY as a sheet mask with cut-out eyes, nose and mouth. Using a whole Kombucha should bring circulation to your skin鈥檚 surface and regenerate skin cells, and the will act as a dead skin peel. Try it for yourself and let us know what you think!听

Life can be stressful. We all know that. And these days, almost everyone is experiencing some sort of worry, anxiety and maybe even depression. There are thousands of reasons why 鈥 emotional distress, a hectic schedule, everyday life, the list goes on. That鈥檚 why we believe we should be doing all we can to boost our mental health. And because there鈥檚 a link between improved mental wellbeing and drinking real, living Kombucha, we think that鈥檚 a pretty good place to start.

How can stress, anxiety and depression affect us?

Stress is a response to pressure or concern, anxiety is a reaction to stress and depression is a long-lasting low mood that affects your daily life. Stress, anxiety and depression are all powerful emotions that can affect us physically, mentally and emotionally..

How can drinking Kombucha help our mental health?

With the fast pace of modern life, most of us have a lot on our plates. But there are ways of protecting our wellbeing like exercise which releases feel-good chemicals that boost self-esteem and generally makes you feel better. Other factors like connecting with friends, getting plenty of sleep and being out in nature also help to keep your spirits lifted. And while we must stress that it鈥檚 not a cure to depression or other diagnosed mental health conditions, adding Kombucha to the mix can help too.

  1. Kombucha as an adaptogen to combat stress

Kombucha can help depression because it鈥檚 an adaptogen 鈥 a plant-based derivative that balances the body. Adaptogens such as fermented tea are great sources of antioxidants 鈥 great for tackling free radicals that cause oxidative stress.

  1. Kombucha for skincare to boost your confidence

Kombucha can also help to reduce skin inflammation 鈥 great news for eczema and acne sufferers.听Kombucha contains organic acids and natural probiotics, which help to hydrate and maintain the natural balance of the skin, so less breakouts.

  1. Kombucha improves your gut health and regulates your digestive system

Stress has a massive impact on the gut. It can often show up as IBS or ulcers, both of which can be helped by drinking Kombucha, as it increases the acidity of the gut and helps to regulate the digestive system. You can read more about the mind-gut promotion here.听

  1. Kombucha is an anti-inflammatory and probiotic, proven to improve symptoms of depression

There鈥檚 a clear link between depression and inflammation, so the anti-inflammatory benefits of probiotic containing drinks like real, living Kombucha may help to regulate gut microbiota and alleviate some symptoms of depression and boost good mental health.

  1. Kombucha is a low sugar and low-alcohol alternative to other drinks, helping improve physical health

Kombucha is known for its feel-good factor, making it a great alcohol substitute, especially when you can ditch the dreaded hangovers. Swap your evening glass of wine for Kombucha and you鈥檒l have less sugar and alcohol in your system, leaving you more focused, more relaxed and more likely to wake up feeling fresh. Healthy body, healthy mind.

  1. Kombucha makes a great alternative to caffeinated drinks which may cause anxiety

Choose Kombucha over coffee as your morning fix and you won鈥檛 have to fight the caffeine jitters. And the L-theanine in Kombucha will offset the negative effects of caffeine, calming body and mind.

Kombucha may not be the cure to depression, but team it with exercise, human connection and a balanced diet and it could help boost mental health. After all, a healthy gut can lift your mood, decrease inflammation and help keep stress at bay. So, it鈥檚 well worth a try. Want to take a step towards a brighter tomorrow? Start today.

Well done mum – you鈥檝e done it! Bringing your child into the world deserves a celebratory booch, but what if you鈥檙e breastfeeding? Can you drink kombucha while breastfeeding? So as you know, we鈥檙e master brewers not doctors, so while we can鈥檛 give you a definitive answer, we can equip you with the facts you need to decide whether to drink kombucha if you鈥檙e breastfeeding.听

Raw and unpasteurised kombucha

Kombucha is a fizzy fermented tea with living bacterial cultures. The best kombucha on the market (ours included) is raw and therefore unpasteurised. What this means is that the naturally-occuring bacteria still remains within the booch. Generally, pregnant or breastfeeding women are advised to avoid unpasteurised foods such as juices or soft cheeses, however it is less straightforward when it comes to kombucha due to the acidic nature of it. High acidity helps to prevent the growth of harmful bacteria in the drink that may make you or your baby unwell, however it鈥檚 never risk free – so check with your GP or midwife if you鈥檙e unsure.听

Kombucha and alcohol

While classified as a soft drink, it does contain a trace amount of alcohol which is created as a by-product from the fermentation process. 黑料大事记 Kombucha contains a tiny amount of alcohol (黑料大事记 Kombucha contains on average 0.5% ABV and a drink is deemed 鈥檔on-alcoholic鈥 when under 1.2% ABV), so it鈥檚 really up to you as a mum whether you feel comfortable consuming it. There鈥檚 no right or wrong answer. You can find out more about the alcohol content of our kombucha here.听

Caffeine content of kombucha聽

advise breastfeeding mothers to 鈥榬estrict their caffeine intake to less than 200mg a day鈥. Kombucha does contain a small amount of caffeine, but only聽 7.43mg per 275ml bottle, so it鈥檚 well within the recommended limit. 1 mug of instant coffee contains 100mg聽 of caffeine and the same quantity of tea contains 75mg, so keep an eye on your intake if you usually drink tea and/or coffee alongside your 黑料大事记 Kombucha.听

Read more about the caffeine in kombucha here.

The jury is out when it comes to kombucha and breastfeeding, but these are the golden rules to follow when choosing what鈥檚 best for you:

  • Avoid home-brewed kombucha: it鈥檚 not regulated in any way so it鈥檚 impossible to gauge the alcohol or caffeine content and general hygiene standards
  • Always read the label: some kombuchas may have a higher caffeine or alcohol content聽
  • If you鈥檙e not still not sure after doing your research, speak to your GP or midwife for expert medical advice聽

Whether you choose to continue enjoying 黑料大事记 Kombucha while breastfeeding or decide to wait until you鈥檙e no longer feeding, we鈥檝e got a booch ready and waiting!

With alcohol, soft cheese and most shellfish out of the equation, can you still enjoy an 黑料大事记 Kombucha if you鈥檙e pregnant? In this article we鈥檒l explore the dos and don鈥檛s when it comes to fermented foods and whether you can drink kombucha while pregnant.听

Is it safe to drink kombucha while pregnant?

There isn鈥檛 a definitive answer when it comes to whether you should avoid kombucha during pregnancy. There are two main factors that cause some contention: the natural bacteria and the small amount of alcohol in kombucha. Let鈥檚 explore further.听

Kombucha contains live bacteria which is created during the fermentation process. While most of the bacteria is gut-boosting 鈥榟ealthy鈥 bacteria, in some instances, depending on the conditions in which the Kombucha is brewed, there can be a small amount of 鈥榖ad鈥 bacteria left behind that could be potentially harmful to the baby. However, this is only really a risk when dealing with home-brewed kombucha, as all commercially-available brands will have to adhere to strict health and safety regulations to ensure any 鈥榖ad鈥 bacteria has been removed. At 黑料大事记 we are a BRC double A grade site (British Retail Consortium Food Safety Standards) and have super high levels of food safety and hygiene in our breweries.听

Kombucha alcohol content聽

There is a very small amount of naturally-occurring alcohol in kombucha, so it鈥檚 a matter of personal choice whether to consume it. Always check the packaging as the alcohol content between brands will vary and be sure to discuss with your GP or midwife if you鈥檙e new to kombucha. 黑料大事记 Kombucha contains a tiny trace amount of alcohol (equivalent to less than 0.5% ABV) which is comparable to an overripe banana. Again, avoid home brewed kombucha because the alcohol content cannot be regulated, so it may be much higher, and therefore make the booch unsafe to consume.听

Read more about the alcohol content of kombucha here.听

Are fermented foods safe for pregnant women?

The advice on whether fermented foods are safe during pregnancy is inconclusive, but most health professionals agree that home fermentation should definitely be avoided because the chance of it containing bad bacteria is higher.听

If fermented foods were a regular part of your diet before pregnancy, consult with your GP about whether they would advise you to cut them out – but if not, as a general rule it鈥檚 best to avoid introducing new foods while pregnant.听

Ultimately, the best advice we can give is check the label, speak to your GP or midwife and make an informed decision! And if you do decide to take a break on the booch, we鈥檒l have one here ready for you to enjoy once your bundle of joy arrives.听

Inspired by our new range of River Cottage kombuchas, which celebrate foraged flavours from the English countryside, we鈥檝e put together a handy foraging guide on what to look out for this Autumn!

What is foraging?

In simple terms, foraging is the process of finding and collecting different wild food types from nature; it means getting out there and exploring your natural surroundings for hidden treasures! When done correctly, foraging is an extremely sustainable and economical way to source wild food.听

The benefits of foraging聽

Over the past few years, foraging has exploded in popularity, even in urban areas. You can now sign up to exclusive foraging courses to learn more about how to find and cook unusual wild plants, mushrooms, fruit and nuts.听

So, why is foraging so popular? Let鈥檚 take a look at the key benefits:

  1. Once you know how, you can find delicious wild foods to enjoy all year round
  2. It allows you to reconnect with and develop a new appreciation for the natural landscape around you
  3. Wild foods tend to be higher in natural nutrients and vitamins than their conventionally grown equivalents
  4. The foraged foods you find are always fresh and in season!
  5. You can save money by cutting back on the amount of food you buy
  6. It enables you to find and experiment with new foods and flavours
  7. You can do it almost anywhere! You don鈥檛 need to live in picturesque countryside聽
  8. It鈥檚 a great activity to enjoy with all the family and get the kids out of the house!

Foraging the familiar

Before you鈥檙e fit to forage, there鈥檚 a few important best practices to keep in mind:

  1. Do your research before so you can identify things easily. If you don鈥檛 know what something is, you鈥檙e best to leave it alone!
  2. Only take what you need; don鈥檛 be greedy or wasteful
  3. Avoid foraging from busy roadsides and other polluted areas
  4. Wash everything thoroughly with clean water before eating
  5. Steer clear of private land, unless you have permission from the landowner
  6. Wear gloves and long sleeves if foraging in prickly hedgerows – safety first!
  7. Avoid always going to the same site for the same thing. Keep on learning and exploring new places!

Can kombucha help you banish the bloat?听

Bloating is an extremely common and uncomfortable condition in which the stomach feels swollen and sore, and often occurs after eating. Bloating is usually a sign of excess wind, constipation, food intolerances or digestive issues, but it can also be a telltale sign of a bacteria imbalance in the gut!

Probiotics and bloating

There are certain types of bacteria which can be extremely beneficial and help to promote a healthy microbial balance. According to Nutritional Therapist Hannah Braye, . We think fermented food and drink is a great place to start!

Fermented foods have been in the limelight of late, but it鈥檚 a trend that鈥檚 set to stick around! Sauerkraut, miso, kimchi, kefir and our favourite, kombucha have rapidly grown in popularity. And, not only do they taste great, but they also have a range of important reported health benefits.

Kombucha and bloating

Kombucha contains live bacteria and organic acids, which if consumed on a regular basis may help to aid digestive issues such as excess gas and bloating. Ginger is also known to act as a natural digestive aid and an anti-inflammatory, so opt for our Ginger Kombucha flavour for extra gut-boosting power.

Although the research around fermented foods and bloating may be inconclusive, many have shared anecdotal stories about the significant improvements in gut health that they have noticed since introducing kombucha into their diet.

We had similar feedback from participants of our Wellness Study, who shared their experience of drinking kombucha everyday for 8 weeks: 鈥淚 think that it is very possible that the kombucha has helped alleviate my bloating..鈥 and 鈥淚 feel good and it flattens my belly (especially after a meal).鈥

Can Kombucha cause bloating?

Kombucha has been known to improve digestive health by regulating the microbial balance in your gut which, in turn, reduces bloating caused by bacteria. However, there鈥檚 no ignoring the obvious. Kombucha is a carbonated drink and carbonated drinks contain which enter your digestive system and can make you bloated when you drink too much.听

Typically, more , like diet lemonade or cola, will cause more bloating. Luckily, 黑料大事记 Kombucha is low in sugar and contains no artificial sweeteners.

Fermented food and drinks are the thing right now. They鈥檙e made through microorganisms 鈥 microscopic factories that churn out nutrients, antioxidants and bacteria. But why are they suddenly so popular?

It seems as though everyone has just realised how incredible fermented food and drinks are. But do you know your kefir from your kombucha?

Fermented food and drinks

Kefir and kombucha are both fermented soft drinks that pack a punch when it comes to health benefits. The biggest difference between them is that kefir is usually dairy-based (although there are some vegan options available) while kombucha is usually tea-based.

They鈥檙e both fermented which means they鈥檙e full of probiotics 鈥 good stuff that鈥檚 good for gut stuff. But just when you think you finally understand what鈥檚 what when it comes to kefir and kombucha, someone throws in the curveball that is kimchi.

Kimchi is more like the weird cousin in the fermented family. It鈥檚 made using lactic acid bacteria and it鈥檚 been used for thousands of years to preserve vegetables. So you won鈥檛 find it in the soft drinks aisle, but it鈥檚 certainly part of the huge fermented foods movement.

Other popular fermented food and drinks include:

  • Sauerkraut
  • Sourdough
  • Miso
  • Yoghurt

One of the most common questions we get about enjoying our beautiful brew is 鈥榳hen is the best time to drink kombucha?鈥. Luckily, there鈥檚 no hard and fast rule or 鈥榦ne size fits all鈥 approach, kombucha can be enjoyed at any time of the day as a little pick me up when you feel you need it most.

First thing in the morning

If it takes you a little while to get going in the morning, or you struggle with feeling sluggish, kombucha can provide you with a great natural lift to kickstart your day. It鈥檚 a great low caffeine alternative to coffee or tea, so you can enjoy a little boost without the dreaded crash! It has also been suggested that consuming kombucha on an empty stomach may also help to balance your gut bacteria to aid digestion throughout the day.

N.B. If you have a more sensitive stomach, you may find that your body reacts better once you have eaten. If this applies to you, start with smaller amounts gradually to build up your tolerance.

If you are a coffee lover then you can try our unique Espresso Coffee Kombucha that is fermented from organic coffee beans instead of green tea.

With food

At 黑料大事记, we love pairing our booch with different foods and coming up with exciting recipes that incorporate our booch. From smoothie bowls (check out our IGTV), and sourdough to delicious bakes, there鈥檚 tonnes of ways you can enjoy your booch with food.

After lunch

It鈥檚 common after lunch to feel a little bloated and sleepy in the afternoon. Many of us may reach for another coffee, a sugary drink, or end up raiding the biscuit tin (guilty!) to get back some much-needed energy to keep going, which can do more harm than good. Opting for a kombucha instead, can help to rebalance the gut and provide you with a sweet (yet relatively low sugar) treat to keep your sugar cravings at bay.

When it comes to bloating, many participants of our 8 week wellness study, who consumed 黑料大事记 Kombucha on a daily basis reported that they had noticed positive effects on their gut health.

鈥淚 really like it and it makes my gut feel good.鈥
鈥淚 have had a bottle every day; usually before lunch and my gut health is excellent at the moment.鈥
鈥淚t is very possible that the kombucha has helped alleviate my bloating鈥
鈥淚 feel good and it flattens my belly (especially avoids a big belly after a meal).鈥

After exercise

黑料大事记 Kombucha contains organic acids, antioxidants and live bacteria which can help you rehydrate your body naturally after exercise, without reaching for sugar-laden sports recovery drinks. , 鈥渒ombucha is rich in B-vitamins and folic acid, which is key for helping the body produce and maintain new cells鈥.

Surfer Logan Nicol enjoys 鈥渄rinking kombucha straight after my surf! It鈥檚 really refreshing after a long session to have a cold 黑料大事记 to rehydrate and get me ready for the next surf!鈥.

In the evening

After a long day, we know how tempting it can be to reach for a glass of wine or a cheeky beer, but it鈥檚 not exactly healthy, especially on a regular basis during the week. Kombucha can be a great alternative to alcohol, with a slightly acidic taste (much like wine!) and an array of interesting and sophisticated flavours to explore.

Almost two thirds (64%) of participants from our post-study survey responded 鈥榶es/sometimes鈥 to considering swapping alcohol for a kombucha. Feedback included:

鈥淚 would buy in pubs as an alternative to alcoholic drinks.鈥
鈥淚t does make a good alcoholic drink substitute I have to say.鈥

You can enjoy kombucha at any time throughout the day. Like everything, it鈥檚 different for everyone, so we recommend experimenting with when works best for you!
